Brilliantly revelatory on so many points and this for certain is an arrow to the heart of the problem of Conrad: "Conrad (a slog through a petrified forest!)" Bravo!

Promising list, but first names would be helpful. “Norris” could be anybody.

Edna Ferber is great, btw, and unjustly forgotten.

C.N. must know that Ferber was also admired for her wit. She favored tailored suits. On one occasion thus clad Noel Coward told her she looked almost like a man. Ferber replied, "So do you." ¶I agree that first names would be helpful.
